October was hectic, and I was unable to record a DJ mix until the last week of the month. Studying and listening to new tunes has its benefits, and throughout the month I arranged an impressive playlist to guide the mix when the time came to record it. November has been no less complicated, but in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, I'm setting aside a few moments to share this mix with you.
It is incredibly difficult to convey one's message or define one's sound through a 60-minute mix. Years ago this fact led to dual-cassette and dual-CD packages, and these days is exemplified through large mp3 files, such as this one.
Thanks to the updated Rockbox build for my iriver HP-120 mp3 player/digital recorder, I can record beyond the 60-minute mark, even past the CD-defined 78-minute threshold. To define a sound was not so much my goal, but there was indeed a message to convey; a message of defiance in the face of bleakness, of misguided hope in the face of shattered plans. I took a stab at conveying this message with this playlist and the result is a two hour and forty-four minute DJ mix that I believe does the trick.
Special thanks to Chris Gin, whose "Be Like Water" dual-cassette DJ mix gave me the inspiration for this work, and to Carson Mell, whose film, "FIELD NOTES FROM DIMENSION X: OASIS," gave me the inspiration for the title.
Enjoy the mix.
